Rapidan Fish Passage Project Update Jeff Waldon, Director of the Rapidan Institute, will describe efforts by the newly formed Rapidan Partnership to address fish passage problems at Rapidan, VA. The dam at Rapidan was installed in the 1930's and since then several migratory fish populations have been unable to traverse the dam and gain access to breeding habitat upstream. An evaluation is underway to determine what modifications would be required to improve fish passage. The existing fish ladder is unsuitable for shad, herring, and striper, and those species have been detected below the dam, but not above the dam. The dam requires maintenance and represents a potential hazard to boaters and fishermen. Next steps are to evaluate the various components of the dam and the pool behind the dam and come up with a plan in 2021 for modifications in 2022. A Virtual Club Program presented by David Laylin. This will be Orange Rotary Club’s first ever HYBRID meeting (IN PERSON at Orange County Airport AND virtual) with guest speaker O’Brian Martin. When we first invited Orange County High School senior O’Brian Martin to talk to us about OCHS’ DECA* program, it was in his capacity as Chapter Advisor. At that time, O’Brian was intensely campaigning for the office of DECA Inc. International High School Division Executive President, a position that serves all 225,000 members and directs the future of the organization for the upcoming year. This month, he won. SOURCE: https://www.ocss-va.org/2021/05/13/ochs-student-elected-deca-high-school-division-executive-president/ "Please join the OCHS community in congratulating O’Brian Martin, who was elected as DECA High School Division Executive President at the International Conference closing session held on 5/12/2021. O’Brian secured over 51% of the votes from around the country, beating out 2 very qualified candidates from Washington and Massachusetts. "O’Brian is the first DECA Executive President to hail from Virginia since 1952. In order to even qualify as a candidate, O’Brian had to first secure the endorsement of the Virginia Board of Trustees, completing a detailed application and interview. He also had to pass a national DECA exam, complete an interview with the National Board of DECA, complete a virtual Q & A with the other candidates, campaign virtually, all while developing a website, media package, social media campaign strategy, and more! It has been a long, arduous process beginning in August and culminating with the win on 5/12/2021." *DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. It has 59 chartered associations (50 states + 9 countries) |

Rotarian David Laylin hosts guest speaker Bryan Hofmann, Deputy Director, Friends of the Rappahannock, to report on the status of the Rappahannock watershed (especially the Rapidan section) and plans for improvements. Note from Bryan: "We are actually in the process of developing a Rapidan River Report Card. We anticipate this being completed in fall 2021. We are also organizing a "state of the Rappahannock" symposium slated for September 2021 which will include multiple presentations from a wide range of natural resource professionals, researchers, and other stakeholders; all focused on the Rappahannock River watershed. Bryan will give an overview of "currently completed report cards, the Rappahannock River Roundtable (a broad coalition of conservation partners working to improve land conservation and water quality in the Rappahannock River Basin https://www.facebook.com/RappahannockRiverRoundtable), issues facing the Rappahannock and Rapidan, and the work our organization and partners are doing, and have available, to improve conditions." |
