Liberty and justice for all: Rappahannock Legal Services, Inc.
Citizens accused of a crime are entitled to a lawyer, regardless of their ability to pay. This is not true in civil cases, Jackie Schlesinger, Development Director, told Orange Rotarians. Enter Rappahannock Legal Services (RLS), a 43-year old non-profit agency that provides free aid to low-income residents dealing with civil suits.
RLS has 3 offices--Fredericksburg, Tappahannock, and Culpeper--serving 17 counties with total staff of 14. Five of the 14 are lawyers.
The vast majority of RLS' cases are either family (primarily custody, support and domestic violence), consumer finance, income maintenance/health, or housing. Services provided range from counsel and advice to full representation in court and administrative hearings.
“In addition to keeping families together and helping victims of domestic violence, I think your members would be surprised to learn how much RLS also saves local governments and the taxpayers in actual dollars by providing these free legal services to our clients.”
